The secure C5ISR Smartwatch can also view those in their immediate vicinity or a larger AGIS CJADC2 C5ISR Common Operational Picture (COP) in MIL STD 2525 format. The Smartwatch displays Friendly and Hostile data link tracks including Ground tracks (received from JVMF), Air tracks (received from Link-16) and Sea tracks (Received from OTH Gold) as well as Friendly and Hostile satellites over passing the area of operations. All data is transmitted and received from AGIS’ Server, which additionally enables the Smartwatch to be interoperable with ATAK.

The C5ISR Smartwatch has the following capabilities that enable it to communicate with others on the network: Incoming / Outgoing Chat, Must Comply Orders from Command where users have to respond with a HAVECO, WILLCO, or CANTCO, Push-to-Talk voice, Emergency Audible Alert Messaging, Biometric Health Monitoring, Integrated Bezel Compass, Digital Map of your area showing locations of friendly and hostile Ground, Air, and Sea tracks, sensor reports including AIS, ADS-B and Satellite, Cellular status, GPS status, and FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging) for Worldwide Alert Messaging.

WHY BLACK AUGUST MATTERS

Black August began in 1979 in San Quentin State Prison as a month-long in memoriam of those who died in the advancement of prison reform. The prison guard shooting death of George Jackson at San Quentin State Prison in California on August 21st, 1971, led to a mass hunger strike across the country including the one at Attica State Prison in New York.

When Attica prisoner demands for better living conditions went unresponsive by prison administrators, the largest prison riot in US history, at the time, would take place, leaving 43 people dead. While one guard was killed by inmates during the initial uprising, the majority of deaths occurred during the retaking of the prison by state police, who shot and killed 39 people, including 10 hostages. American prison conditions haven't improved since the 70s.

On August 19, 2017, people marched in Washington DC and in 16 other cities for the Millions for Prisoners Human Rights March. Marchers and organizers demanded the abolition of the 13th Amendment’s Slavery Exception Clause as punishment for a crime, and to organize against mass incarceration and abuse in U.S. prisons. This November, voters in California will have the opportunity to end their Involuntary Servitude as a punishment for a crime in their constitution when they vote Yes on Proposition 6.

All across the country during the month of July, record heat waves have caused a torrent of articles decrying the lack of air conditioning in prisons. While there have not been any confirmed prisoner deaths directly attributed to the July 2024 heat waves as of yet, there is growing concern and evidence suggesting a strong correlation between extreme heat and increased mortality rates in prisons.

And just this week, President Biden signed into law, The Federal Prison Oversight Act, which passed the Senate on July 10 and the House in May. It establishes an independent ombudsman to field and investigate complaints in the wake of sexual assaults and other criminal misconduct by staff, chronic understaffing, escapes and high-profile deaths. It would require the Justice Department’s inspector general to conduct risk-based inspections of all 122 federal prison facilities, provide recommendations to address deficiencies and assign each facility a risk score.

Abusive prison conditions, such as California's chronic overcrowding conditions, were found to be a direct contributor to its failure to uphold its constitutional obligation to provide its prisoners adequate dental, physical and mental health care. In a 5-4 decision in Brown v. Plata (2011), the U.S. Supreme Court ordered California to reduce its prison population by 30,000 prisoners, writing for the majority opinion was Justice Kennedy.

The Hurt Locker follows an American EOD team into combat during the Iraq War. Led by risk-taking Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner), this 3-man explosive ordnance disposal team is called in to diffuse various threats – from a wire in the sand, to a car parked illegally, to a kneeling man wrapped in a locked vest – any one of which might lead to injury or death.

Shot on handheld cameras in a mock documentary style, The Hurt Locker eventually received nine Oscar nominations, winning six at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and Best Achievement in Sound Editing. (The remaining nominations were for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Cinematography, and Best Achievement in Music – Original Score.)

“It’s easy to look back in retrospect, and say, of course,” says SWAN’s founder Jan Lisa Huttner, “but the fact that Kathryn Bigelow became the very first woman in the 82-year history of the Academy Awards to win an Oscar for Best Director was absolutely not a foregone conclusion.”

The first public screening of The Hurt Locker was on September 4, 2008, at the Venice Film Festival, after which it was screened at various international venues in Argentina, Canada, Norway, and Poland. So, The Hurt Locker was a contender for the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards (although not the Academy Awards which have different eligibility requirements). How many Spirit Award nominations did The Hurt Locker receive on December 2, 2008? Two, one of which was for Best Male Lead Actor and the other for Best Male Supporting Actor. And how many Spirit Awards did The Hurt Locker win on February 21, 2009? Zero.
What accounts for this dramatic change between December 2, 2008 (when the 2009 Spirit Award nominees were announced) and February 2, 2010 (when the 2010 Academy Award nominees were announced)?

For one thing, Barack Obama became the President of the United States of America on January 20, 2009, so the American public’s perception of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began to change during Obama’s first year in office. Maybe that was enough to push The Hurt Locker to the top?

In fact, women like Huttner stepped up. Huttner, a longtime feminist activist and film critic, was one of the women who immediately began demanding recognition for Bigelow’s work. She wrote articles specifically challenging women to see The Hurt Locker – invoking comedienne Joan Rivers’ famous challenge “Can We Talk?” – and she organized screenings for women which ended with robust Q&A sessions, all in an effort to push The Hurt Locker past the $100 million mark in domestic box office revenue. Meanwhile, several male colleagues, and even some women in her audiences, accused her of supporting The Hurt Locker “just because it was made by a woman,” ignoring all the times she had been critical of other female-helmed projects.

Huttner says everything was touch and go until January 30, 2010, when, after 61 consecutive ceremonies, Bigelow became the first woman named Best Director at the 62nd Directors Guild of America Awards. But the tension was palpable when Barbra Streisand – who had not been nominated for her film Yentl even after having won the Golden Globe – took the stage at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on March 7, 2010 to read the list of Best Director nominees. And Streisand’s joy as she read out the name “Kathryn Bigelow” unleashed a wave of emotions in all women directors, most women film critics, and many women watching at home.

According to Huttner, Oscar campaigns are structurally similar in many ways to American political campaigns (although most viewers are oblivious because they’re not voters). “Oscars don’t just happen. People have to work really hard for attention, and that takes time, energy, and commitment. Without momentum, distributors won’t make the financial investments required to win."

Ironically, this 15th anniversary of the release of The Hurt Locker comes just as a major political party is about to nominate a woman for President of the United States for only the second time in our history. Suffice it to say, this was not something anyone predicated on New Years Day of 2024. Let The Hurt Locker story – from surprise, to mobilization, to success – point the way; if women mobilize in 2024 like they did in 2010, then maybe, once again, one woman will go where no woman has gone before, and then another ceiling will have been shattered forever.

Eight young leaders from South Africa’s most impoverished townships attend the prestigious Festival 24 event and the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony.

These young people, from Afrika Tikkun’s 360° Wellness and Fitness programme, were selected after a highly competitive process and are the best of the best. Festival 24 event took place from the 19th to 28th July in Lyon, France. The annual event brought together over 500 participants from 37 countries for 10 days of sports and cultural exchange, and culminated in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of a global celebration that transcends borders, through the power of sport, was sponsored by Festival 24 organiser, Sport dans la Ville. The association helps young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods on their path to success. Through sport, it transmits values that are important for personal development and professional integration. Its mission is to give young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods the confidence, desire and means to dream and succeed.

Afrika Tikkun’s eight young people attended the opening ceremony last Friday and had the privilege of participating in workshops during the week preceding the opening ceremony. These workshops promoted respect, friendship and equality and engaged each participant in an educational and cultural exchange programme. They also participated and led various vibrant cultural performances, showcasing the rich and diverse heritage of SA to foster understanding and unity among people from different cultures and continents.

The delegates took part in friendly competitions where they demonstrated their skills on an international stage, in a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports. Afrika Tikkun’s young leaders led and participated in workshops to share best practices in sports, leadership, and community engagement.

Afrika Tikkun’s Group CEO, Dr. Onyi Nwaneri, expressed that the eight young ambassadors have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication and a commitment to excellence in their respective fields.

“As an ally of the LGBTQ community and mental health advocate, it is important to provide an experience charged with acceptance and inclusivity, which aligns with the therapeutic work that we do,” says Dominique Hamler, Executive Director of Los Angeles Outpatient Center. “We are here to de-stigmatize and promote change in support of affirmative mental health care.”

On Sunday, June 9th, LAOP teamed up with the LGBTQ Association of Addiction and Mental Health Professionals (AAMHP) to show their support alongside other mental health treatment providers at 54th Annual LA Pride Parade,

The community events continue at Venice Summer Fest, June 22nd from noon to 8 p.m. in Mar Vista. As the only mental health Community Partner present, LAOP is getting revamped as “Camp LAOP,” inviting the public to “sign up for summer camp” to learn more about their full- and half-day outpatient programs, including an LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy focus.

LAOP is also hosting an Open House/Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, June 25th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Guests can expect to receive a tour of the facility with the admissions and clinical team. There will be a panel on supporting LGBTQIA+ mental health, featuring LAOP leadership and LGBTQIA+ mental health professionals, as well as Pride-themed activities. RSVP here on Eventbright:
